The Drone Exercise

This is a great exercise for training your ear. Use it wherever your teacher mentions you have intonation problems, with your scales and arpeggios, anywhere!

  1. Acquire a device that will play drones.
  2. Choose a pitch that best captures the tonal center of the practice unit.
  3. Turn on a metronome at 60bpm.
  4. Play the unit 2x with separate bows, 4 clicks of the metronome per note, tuning each note to the drone pitch.

EXAMPLE

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Nocturne, 1888 (arr. Vadim Borissovsky, 1946)
