God’s plan enables his children to progress towards perfection and obtain eternal life

3 Nephi 12:48

  1. Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.

3 Nephi 27:27

  1. ... Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am.

Moroni 10:32

  1. Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind, and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.

D&C 14:7

  1. And, if you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.

Gender is an eternal characteristic of our identity and purpose and men and women are designed to progress towards eternal life together as husband and wife

Moses 3:18-25

  1. And I, the Lord God, said unto mine Only Begotten, that it was not good that the man should be alone; wherefore, I will make an help meet for him.
  2. And out of the ground I, the Lord God, formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and commanded that they should come unto Adam, to see what he would call them; and they were also living souls; for I, God, breathed into them the breath of life, and commanded that whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that should be the name thereof.
  3. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but as for Adam, there was not found an help meet for him.
  4. And I, the Lord God, caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam; and he slept, and I took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in the stead thereof;
  5. And the rib which I, the Lord God, had taken from man, made I a woman, and brought her unto the man.
  6. And Adam said: This I know now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.
  7. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh.
  8. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Moses 4:17-19, 22-26

  1. And I, the Lord God, said unto Adam: Who told thee thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat, if so thou shouldst surely die?
  2. And the man said: The woman thou gavest me, and commandest that she should remain with me, she gave me of the fruit of the tree and I did eat.
  3. And I, the Lord God, said unto the woman: What is this thing which thou hast done? And the woman said: The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat...
  1. Unto the woman, I, the Lord God, said: I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception. In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children, and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
  2. And unto Adam, I, the Lord God, said: Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the fruit of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying—Thou shalt not eat of it, cursed shall be the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.
  3. Thorns also, and thistles shall it bring forth to thee, and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.
  4. By the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, until thou shalt return unto the ground—for thou shalt surely die—for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou wast, and unto dust shalt thou return.
  5. And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living; for thus have I, the Lord God, called the first of all women, which are many.

Proverbs 31:10-15, 20-31

  1. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
  2. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
  3. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
  4. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
  5. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
  6. She ariseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
  1. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
  2. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
  3. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
  4. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
  5. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
  6. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
  7. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
  8. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
  9. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
  10. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
  11. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
  12. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

D&C 25:1-5, 10, 13-16

  1. Hearken unto the voice of the Lord your God, while I speak unto you, Emma Smith, my daughter; for verily I say unto you, all those who receive my gospel are sons and daughters in my kingdom.
  2. A revelation I give unto you concerning my will; and if thou art faithful and walk in the paths of virtue before me, I will preserve thy life, and thou shalt receive an inheritance in Zion.
  3. Behold, thy sins are forgiven thee, and thou art an elect lady, whom I have called.
  4. Murmur not because of the things which thou hast not seen, for they are withheld from thee and from the world, which is wisdom in me in a time to come.
  5. And the office of thy calling shall be for a comfort unto my servant, Joseph Smith, Jun., thy husband, in his afflictions, with consoling words, in the spirit of meekness.
  1. And verily I say unto thee that thou shalt lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better.
  1. Wherefore, lift up thy heart and rejoice, and cleave unto the covenants which thou hast made.
  2. Continue in the spirit of meekness, and beware of pride. Let thy soul delight in thy husband, and the glory which shall come upon him.
  3. Keep my commandments continually, and a crown of righteousness thou shalt receive. And except thou do this, where I am you cannot come.
  4. And verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my voice unto all. Amen.

D&C 121: 34-44

  1. Behold, there are many called, but few are chosen. And why are they not chosen?
  2. Because their hearts are set so much upon the things of this world, and aspire to the honors of men, that they do not learn this one lesson—
  3. That the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness.
  4. That they may be conferred upon us, it is true; but when we undertake to cover our sins, or to gratify our pride, our vain ambition, or to exercise control or dominion or compulsion upon the souls of the children of men, in any degree of unrighteousness, behold, the heavens withdraw themselves; the Spirit of the Lord is grieved; and when it is withdrawn, Amen to the priesthood or the authority of that man.
  5. Behold, ere he is aware, he is left unto himself, to kick against the pricks, to persecute the saints, and to fight against God.
  6. We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.
  7. Hence many are called, but few are chosen.
  8. No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;
  9. By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile—
  10. Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy;
  11. That he may know that thy faithfulness is stronger than the cords of death.

Alma 13:3-6, 9

  1. And this is the manner after which they were ordained—being called and prepared from the foundation of the world according to the foreknowledge of God, on account of their exceeding faith and good works; in the first place being left to choose good or evil; therefore they having chosen good, and exercising exceedingly great faith, are called with a holy calling, yea, with that holy calling which was prepared with, and according to, a preparatory redemption for such.
  2. And thus they have been called to this holy calling on account of their faith, while others would reject the Spirit of God on account of the hardness of their hearts and blindness of their minds, while, if it had not been for this they might have had as great privilege as their brethren.
  3. Or in fine, in the first place they were on the same standing with their brethren; thus this holy calling being prepared from the foundation of the world for such as would not harden their hearts, being in and through the atonement of the Only Begotten Son, who was prepared—
  4. And thus being called by this holy calling, and ordained unto the high priesthood of the holy order of God, to teach his commandments unto the children of men, that they also might enter into his rest—
  1. Thus they become high priests forever, after the order of the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, who is without beginning of days or end of years, who is full of grace, equity, and truth. And thus it is. Amen.
