God’s commandment for his children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force and the means by which mortal life is created is divinely appointed

Genesis 1:27-28

  1. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
  2. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:

Genesis 2:24-25

  1. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
  2. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Psalm 127:3

  1. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

D&C 49:15-17

  1. And again, verily I say unto you, that whoso forbiddeth to marry is not ordained of God, for marriage is ordained of God unto man.
  2. Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh, and all this that the earth might answer the end of its creation;
  3. And that it might be filled with the measure of man, according to his creation before the world was made.

The sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between a man and a woman lawfully wedded as husband and wife

1 Corinthians 6:13-20

  1.  . . . Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
  2. And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
  3. Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
  4. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
  5. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
  6. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
  7. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
  8. For ye are abought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Alma 39:3-9

  1. And this is not all, my son. Thou didst do that which was grievous unto me; for thou didst forsake the ministry, and did go over into the land of Siron among the borders of the Lamanites, after the harlot Isabel.
  2. Yea, she did steal away the hearts of many; but this was no excuse for thee, my son. Thou shouldst have tended to the ministry wherewith thou wast entrusted.
  3. Know ye not, my son, that these things are an abomination in the sight of the Lord; yea, most abominable above all sins save it be the shedding of innocent blood or denying the Holy Ghost?
  4. For behold, if ye deny the Holy Ghost when it once has had place in you, and ye know that ye deny it, behold, this is a sin which is unpardonable; yea, and whosoever murdereth against the light and knowledge of God, it is not easy for him to obtain forgiveness; yea, I say unto you, my son, that it is not easy for him to obtain a forgiveness.
  5. And now, my son, I would to God that ye had not been guilty of so great a crime. I would not dwell upon your crimes, to harrow up your soul, if it were not for your good.
  6. But behold, ye cannot hide your crimes from God; and except ye repent they will stand as a testimony against you at the last day.
  7. Now my son, I would that ye should repent and forsake your sins, and go no more after the lusts of your eyes, but cross yourself in all these things; for except ye do this ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God. Oh, remember, and take it upon you, and cross yourself in these things.

3 Nephi 12:27-30

  1. Behold, it is written by them of old time, that thou shalt not commit adultery;
  2. But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman, to lust after her, hath committed adultery already in his heart.
  3. Behold, I give unto you a commandment, that ye suffer none of these things to enter into your heart;
  4. For it is better that ye should deny yourselves of these things, wherein ye will take up your cross, than that ye should be cast into hell.

D&C 42:22-24

  1. Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else.
  2. And he that looketh upon a woman to lust after her shall deny the faith, and shall not have the Spirit; and if he repents not he shall be cast out.
  3. Thou shalt not commit adultery; and he that committeth adultery, and repenteth not, shall be cast out.

D&C 59:6

  1. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Thou shalt not steal; neither commit adultery, nor kill, nor do anything like unto it.

D&C 63:16

  1. And verily I say unto you, as I have said before, he that looketh on a woman to lust after her, or if any shall commit adultery in their hearts, they shall not have the Spirit, but shall deny the faith and shall fear.

1 Corinthians 7:1-5

  1. Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
  2. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
  3. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
  4. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
  5. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

D&C 121:45-46

  1. Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.
  2. The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.
