Emerging Adulthood

Jeffrey Arnette

Learning Outcomes

Jeffrey Arnette discovered unique insights about this period of development by listening to individuals in interviews. They did not consider themselves late adolescents or young adults. His research describes emerging adulthood as marked by:

  1. Identity explorations, especially in love and work-life (studies, etc.)
  2. Instability, in love, work, and residence
  3. Self-focus, obligations to others reach a life-span low
  4. Feeling in-between, not adolescent, not yet adult
  5. Possibilities/optimism, an unparalleled opportunity

Jeffrey Arnette describes four movements that have given rise to emerging adulthood. Be sure to understand each and describe how it relates to emerging adulthood:

Perhaps the most significant factor has been the technology revolution which has revolutionized manufacturing and created a knowledge economy in which higher education is nearly essential. The tech revolution should continue to spread throughout the world, and the other three movements are not as likely to spread throughout the cultures of the world.

The average age for marriage among women is 34 for males and 33 for females in the United States. In 2010 the median age was 28 for males and 26 for females, now it is almost 31 for males and 30 for females.

Top three criteria for adulthood from both interviews and questionnaires:

  1. Accept responsibility for yourself
  2. Make independent decisions
  3. Become financially independent

Emerging adulthood is culturally and contextually manifested, less evident in the Church culture
