Starting Off

This exercise is usually the first place to go after figuring out the fingerings and bowings. It builds the interdependence between the right and left hands in a simple, straightforward routine.

  1. Play the practice unit 2x with slow, separate bows of even length
  2. Play the unit 3x, subdividing notes into equal lengths
  3. Play the unit 3x as above but change the rhythm to “hiccups.” In the breaks between each hiccup, prepare the next note by placing the finger and bow on the correct string.
  4. Play the unit 3x with the correct rhythm, hooking any slurs (if applicable).
  5. Play the unit 5x as written, with correct rhythm and bowing.

You are now ready to apply a Speed it Up exercise to the practice unit.

EXAMPLES

Franz Schubert: Sonata für Arpeggione und Klavier, 1824
First Movement: Allegro Moderato
