W02 Discussion: Virtual Talent Show

Overview

It is important to know where you excel.  Part of getting a job or getting promoted is knowing your attributes, skills, and gifts--and being able to articulate them.

This week, our discussion board asks you self-disclose (reveal information about yourself that is significant and that would not normally be known by others) and share one of your talents or gifts.

Instructions

Initial Post - Due Midweek

In your WhatsApp group

  1. Post a video, photo, image, poem, or description of any talent you possess in your Whatsapp group chat by the initial due date. Write a little about your gift, if it needs explanation. It can be any talent, but keep in mind, no one will watch a 20-minute video of you painting. Keep it short and accessible. Try to be visual!

Responses - Due End of the Week

  1. Provide feedback to at least two peers’ questions by the deadline. Give them the type of feedback that you wish you could receive in answer to their questions. (See the example feedback below.)
  2. Check-in at least twice a week on different days.
  3. Indicate you are done with your assignment by going to W02 Discussion: Virtual Talent Show assignment in Canvas to do the following:
    • Select Start Assignment of this Canvas assignment
    • Copy/paste the text of your initial WhatsApp post in the Text Entry box. Summarize the visual you posted. (Example: I included a video of me playing the flute).
    • Include which days and dates you posted. One day should be before the midweek deadline. (Example: I posted on Monday and Friday.)
    • Summarize two interactions you had with two other students. Include each by name. (Example: I asked Lee how long she had been playing piano. She responded by telling me she started when she was only five years old! I also responded to Jose's question about what song I was playing in my video.)
    • Select Submit Assignment.
    • (Your assignment will not be graded unless you complete this step. See example below.)

Omari’s Example on WhatsApp

Women serving food

I learned to cook with my grandmother, and I love to cook for my family and friends. I especially love to make spicy peanut soup and jollof rice. Here is a photo of a dinner I made!

Example of Feedback to Omari’s WhatsApp Post

Well done, Omari. I do not cook, but I do love to eat! Would you share your recipe for jollof rice? It is my favorite.

Example of Omari’s submission to be graded in Canvas

My initial postI learned to cook with my grandmother, and I love to cook for my family and friends. I especially love to make spicy peanut soup and jollof rice. Here is a photo of a dinner I made!

My visual: I posted a picture of a dinner I made for my auntie's birthday.

My days: I posted on Tuesday Jan 3 and again on Thursday Jan 5.

My interaction: Juma asked me for my recipe for jollof rice, so I shared it with the entire class. I hope someone will enjoy it! I also told Jacob that I was impressed with his talent for service. This is a talent that might be overlooked by others, but I respect him for including it.
