3.4.3 Dairy Group

Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt are good sources of many nutrients such as protein, calcium, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. Paying attention to nutrient-density is important when choosing sources of dairy in your diet.  The caloric content varies significantly between the products, and added sugars are commonly found in associated products. Other dairy products such as sour cream and cream cheese are not included in the dairy food group because they are not a good source of these nutrients. Many dairy substitutes such as almond, rice, and soy milk are often fortified with calcium and vitamin D to be a suitable dairy replacement. However, except for soy milk, they are not a good source of protein.
