Summary:

In summary, autonomy is essential in the discovery of oneself in understanding our own emotions and actions. Autonomy also helps us understand the way we interact with others depending on how we view ourselves and our own sense of identity.

Teacher Applicaiton

One aspect of autonomy is the ability to control one's own emotions. Implementing SEL (social emotional learning) into your classroom can help students develop this portion of autonomy. SEL can be taught as its own section/unit or can be incorrperated into your everyday lesson plans.

Helping students set and meet goals is another way to help them develop their autonomy. This allows them to feel in control of their life and learning. Guide them to set goals that will be attainable but will also help them to grow. Give them the responsibility to remember and work on their goals.
